Basic Tutorial: 

For over 100 years, the Grand Canyon has challenged filmmakers with some of the roughest conditions on Earth. In June, with help from Google, 360 Labs took the Jump 360º 3D camera system on a 10 day river trip with Western River Expeditions.

VR producer, Matt Rowell managed 32 GoPro cameras across multiple 360º arrays for the principle photography on "As It Is: A Grand Canyon VR Documentary" due out this winter across a variety of platforms. 

In this Jump piece, we explore just a few of it's wonders while listening to the final night's passage in the journal of Buzz Holmstrom who rowed the length of the Colorado River from Wyoming to Hoover Dam in a handmade boat in 1937. He did it alone.

On one tough hike, Matt took a hard fall in a slot canyon with the Jump camera case. Fortunately, Matt wasn't seriously injured, but inside the case, one of the GoPro lenses was badly scratched and resulted in a vertical blur in a few of these Jump shots.

The challenge: create a 360 degrees animated experience that puts the viewer in the center of a kaleidoscopic tunnel for the product launch of Hyundai Creta. The solution: integrate 2D and 3D elements with video footage using the latest technologies like Mettle Skybox Studio and 360 renders from 3ds Max.

CollectiveBKP was commissioned to create the lifestyle video for the launch. The project comprised of capturing 360 live action video and seamlessly connecting it to animated kaleidoscope sections. They contacted Dubai based animation studio We Are Alive for support with the creation of the animated sections.

My first 3D 360 Drinving video shot on twin THETA S, edited on Adove Premiere and Kolor AVP+APG. 3D stitching is quite difficult as lenses to subjects distance are limited to very short as compared to the THETA S lens distances of 40mm and 20mm.

VR has all but torn down the barriers between the imagination of the creator and the experience of the viewer. A concept like The Pull simply does not translate into traditional 2D. We can suggest concepts through TVs and monitors, but we can’t truly experience them — and breaking the very laws of nature is something that can only be experienced.
While flat media limits us to hinting and coaxing at an experience, by creating in VR, I can more faithfully share my vision with you, the viewer. For a few minutes – for five chambers – I can truly invite you into my world.

“Marriage Equality VR” is a recreation of the events leading up to the US Supreme Court’s Decision regarding the legality of same-sex marriage. At the center of the debate was the 14th Amendment providing for due process and equal protection under the law for all Americans. The court ruled on the following question: Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex?

“Marriage Equality VR” was shot in July 2015 for the company Nokia as a demo film for their new VR camera: The Nokia Ozo. The film was produced by 3ality Technica, in association with Gannett Company, Inc. Written and directed by Steve Schklair & Celine Tricart.
